Does Drinking Earlier in the Evening Actually Protect Your Overnight Heart Rate?

The most useful finding in the largest wearable alcohol dataset ever published is not that drinking raises your overnight heart rate. Anyone with a ring already knows that. It is that the size of the hit is partly under your control. Grosicki and colleagues pulled 5.1 million person-days from 20,968 WHOOP wearers and compared each person's drinking nights against their own sober nights (see [1]). One additional drink above someone's personal average tracked with a 2.8 bpm rise in overnight resting heart rate and a 3.8 ms drop in HRV in females, 2.4 bpm and 3.3 ms in males.
The moderators are where it gets interesting. Shifting the same drinks 60 minutes earlier was associated with roughly 0.87 bpm lower resting heart rate and 1.5 ms more HRV in females (see [1]). In a lab study, 30 adults who drank to about 0.066 mg/L breath alcohol an hour before bed front-loaded slow wave sleep into the first third of the night, delayed REM onset, and lost roughly 11 minutes of REM on the first night (see [2]). A meta-analysis of 27 studies put the REM disruption threshold at around two standard drinks, worsening as dose climbed (see [3]). Ethanol cleared before lights out is ethanol that is not rebounding through the back half of the night.
