Take four months off lifting and you will watch muscle you earned drain away, but the machinery that built it does not leave with the size. In a 2024 study, twelve untrained people trained one arm for ten weeks, sat through sixteen weeks of nothing, then trained both arms again. Researchers took 55 untrained adults and split them: one group trained continuously for twenty weeks, the other trained ten weeks, took a ten-week break, then trained ten more. The break group needed thirty weeks of calendar time to match what the continuous group did in twenty, so a layoff does stretch the timeline. But here is the part worth taping to your water bottle: after the break, they reached their pre-break level within five weeks of restarting (see [2]). Five weeks to reclaim ten weeks of work.

Strength holds up even better than size. In that same trial, maximum strength recovered faster than muscle cross-section during the comeback, partly because a chunk of your strength lives in the nervous system's ability to recruit what you already have (see [2]). Reviews of the muscle-memory literature report that these retained nuclei can persist for years, which is why someone returning after a long break rebuilds faster than a true beginner ever could (see [3]). So do not treat a forced layoff as a reset to zero. A vacation, a stretch of travel, a busy month at work, none of it deletes years of training. When you come back, resist the urge to chase your old top sets on day one and build back over a few weeks instead, letting the numbers climb, which they will, quickly.
