The plant-versus-animal protein question keeps getting answered as if all plant protein were one thing. A 2025 meta-analysis in Nutrition Reviews pooled 30 randomized trials and 1,538 people and found animal protein slightly ahead for muscle mass overall, a standardized mean difference of 0.20 (see [1]). A crossover trial in the Journal of Nutrition fed 34 active older adults, average age 72, ten days of a controlled vegan diet and ten days of a protein-matched omnivorous diet, then measured muscle protein synthesis directly (see [3]). It came in at 1.23 percent per day on the vegan diet and 1.29 percent on the omnivorous one, a difference that did not reach significance. The vegan diet drew on a spread of plant sources rather than leaning on any single one.
So the label on the tub is not the variable. Leucine content and total dose are, and one narrow plant isolate is where people actually lose ground, not plant protein as a category. If most of your protein comes from soy, pea, or several plant sources spread across the day, the trials say you are fine. If it is rice powder and oats and not much else, that is the scenario with a real gap behind it.
