Claude's health integration vs Wellness Project: do you need both?

Wellness Project is a third-party AI health platform, free during early access, that logs workouts and meals by chat on any device; Claude's native Apple Health and Health Connect integration, in beta since January 2026, is a read-only feature limited to Claude Pro and Max subscribers on the iOS and Android apps in the US, and is not available on claude.ai web at all. They read similar wearable data but solve different problems.

What is Claude's native health integration?

Anthropic announced a broader healthcare push at the JPM26 conference in January 2026 (Anthropic, January 11, 2026), and rolled out four connectors in beta the same week: Apple Health on iOS, Android Health Connect, HealthEx, and Function Health. HealthEx is the medical-records piece, built on the federal TEFCA interoperability framework, and reaches patient data across more than 50,000 provider organizations. It is limited to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US, and it lives in the Claude iOS and Android apps specifically, not claude.ai web or Claude Desktop.

It is read-only. Claude's own help documentation states plainly that Claude can read health data but cannot write or modify entries in Apple Health (Claude Help Center).

What is Wellness Project?

Wellness Project is a separate AI health platform that connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, and Mistral over one MCP server, rather than living inside a single assistant's own app. It logs workouts, meals, sleep, and recovery from plain-English chat, connects Fitbit and Oura directly, and reads Apple Health and Google Health Connect for the rest. It keeps a server-side history that outlasts whatever a phone's hub currently retains.

Can Claude log a workout or meal through this integration?

No. This is the functional gap that matters most day to day. Claude's Apple Health connection can summarize your medical history, explain a lab result, or point out a trend in your sleep or activity, but it has no path to write anything back. Mention a run in conversation and it stays in that conversation; it does not become a logged Apple Health workout.

Wellness Project is built for the opposite: "log my run, 4 miles in 35 minutes easy" saves a structured entry the moment you send it, whether you are talking to Wellness Project directly or to Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, or Mistral through the connected MCP server.

Do I need Claude Pro or Max, and does it work on claude.ai web?

Yes to the first, no to the second, as of July 2026. Claude's native health connectors are limited to Pro and Max subscribers; Claude's Free plan does not include them. And the integration runs only inside the Claude iOS and Android apps, not on claude.ai in a browser and not on Claude Desktop. If your Claude usage is mostly Desktop at a computer, this integration is not reachable there at all today.

Wellness Project reaches Claude on claude.ai web and Claude Desktop as well as the phone apps, and it is free during early access, so neither the plan requirement nor the surface limitation applies to it.

The row that does not favor Wellness Project is medical records. Claude's HealthEx connector reaches real patient data across tens of thousands of provider organizations under a federal interoperability standard. Wellness Project has no equivalent, and does not claim one.

Where Claude's integration wins: patient medical records

HealthEx and Anthropic's partnership gives Claude Pro and Max users a way to pull real clinical history, not just fitness and activity data, into a conversation, across more than 50,000 provider organizations on the TEFCA framework (HealthEx, January 2026). Wellness Project does not connect to medical-records systems. If pulling your actual chart, visit notes, or a broad clinical history into Claude is the job, this integration does that and Wellness Project does not.

Reading your data is the easy half

A summary of last week's sleep or a plain-English explanation of a lab value is genuinely useful, and Claude's native connectors do that well within their scope: Pro and Max, US, the phone apps, read-only. The part that connector alone does not solve is what happens next: logging today's training, catching a wearable that is not one of the four named sources, or keeping history further back than the phone hub currently holds.

Wellness Project sits alongside it rather than instead of it. The medical-record read stays Claude's job; the logging, the extra device connections, and the desktop and web access are what Wellness Project adds on top.

Max Kline reads this for you.

So, Claude's integration or Wellness Project?

They answer different questions. Claude's native connectors are the fastest way to get real medical records and Apple Health data in front of Claude on your phone, if you already pay for Pro or Max, live in the US, and mostly use the phone apps. Wellness Project is the layer that logs your day by chat, connects Fitbit or Oura directly, works on claude.ai web and Claude Desktop as well as mobile, is not gated behind a paid Claude plan or US-only availability, and turns raw numbers into scores like Fit Score and estimated one-rep max.

If your priority is patient medical records inside Claude, use the native connector. If your priority is logging by talking, a wider device list, desktop access, or using ChatGPT, Grok, or Mistral instead of Claude specifically, Wellness Project is the piece that is actually missing. Running both is common and reasonable.

Frequently asked questions

What is Claude's native health integration?+

Anthropic announced a healthcare push at JPM26 in January 2026, and on January 22, 2026 rolled out beta support for Apple Health (iOS), Android Health Connect, HealthEx (patient medical records from 50,000+ provider organizations, built on the federal TEFCA framework), and Function Health. It is limited to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US, on the Claude iOS and Android apps, not on claude.ai web or Claude Desktop.

Can Claude's Apple Health integration log a workout or meal for me?+

No. Claude's own documentation is explicit that the integration is read-only: Claude can read health data but cannot write or modify entries in Apple Health. It can summarize what is already there, explain a lab result, or spot a trend, but telling Claude about a workout in conversation does not save anything to Apple Health, Health Connect, or anywhere else. Wellness Project works the other way: a chat message like "log 3x8 squats at 185" becomes a saved, structured entry immediately.

Does this require a paid Claude plan?+

Yes. As of July 2026, Claude's native health integration is limited to Claude Pro and Max subscribers; Claude's Free plan does not include it. That is the opposite of ChatGPT Health, which shipped free on every plan, so it is worth checking which company you mean before assuming either way. Wellness Project is free during early access regardless of which assistant you connect it to.

Can I use this on claude.ai in a browser?+

No. Claude's Apple Health and Health Connect integration runs only inside the Claude iOS and Android apps. It is not available on claude.ai web or Claude Desktop as of July 2026. Wellness Project reaches Claude over MCP on claude.ai web and Claude Desktop as well as the phone apps, so if your workflow is Claude Desktop at a laptop all day, Wellness Project is the only one of the two that gets your health data there at all.

Does Claude's integration read Fitbit, Oura, Whoop, or Garmin?+

Not directly. The four documented connectors are Apple Health, Android Health Connect, HealthEx, and Function Health. Fitbit, Oura, Whoop, Garmin, Coros, Polar, and Amazfit are not named integrations; the only way their data reaches Claude natively is if the device already relays into Apple Health or Health Connect. Wellness Project connects Fitbit and Oura directly over OAuth and reads the rest through the same two hubs.

Does Wellness Project replace this integration?+

Not for medical records, and that is worth saying plainly. Claude's HealthEx connector reaches patient records across 50,000+ provider organizations under the TEFCA interoperability framework, which Wellness Project does not do. What Wellness Project adds is logging by chat, direct Fitbit and Oura connections, claude.ai web and Claude Desktop support (not just the phone apps), availability outside the US, and derived scores like Fit Score and estimated one-rep max. Many people use both: Claude's connector for medical history, Wellness Project for day-to-day tracking and coaching.
