Heart Rate Zones During Exercise: What Each Zone Means

Heart-rate zones turn a changing pulse into useful intensity bands. They help separate easy aerobic work from moderate, threshold, and very hard efforts, but the exact boundaries depend on the method and the person.

A common five-zone model uses roughly 50-60%, 60-70%, 70-80%, 80-90%, and 90-100% of maximum heart rate. Use lower zones for much of your steady aerobic work and higher zones for targeted harder sessions. Your best zone depends on the workout goal, not one universal target.

The five-zone model, without pretending it is exact

Wellness Project's provider-neutral workout view can use five bands anchored to your maximum heart rate: about 50-60%, 60-70%, 70-80%, 80-90%, and 90-100%. That framework is useful for comparing intensity within your own history, but it is not a universal law. Some providers use threshold heart rate, heart-rate reserve, custom zones, or their own labels, so two apps can put the same 145 bpm in different zones.

What heart-rate zone should you exercise in?

There is no single best zone for every workout. Easy endurance and recovery sessions usually belong in lower personalized zones where conversation is comfortable. Tempo, threshold, interval, and race-specific work intentionally move higher. The useful question is whether the zone matches the purpose of the session, not whether you spent the most time in the hardest color.

Zones work better with the rest of the workout

Time in zone becomes more useful when it sits beside duration, pace or speed, distance, perceived effort, Training Load, heart-rate recovery, HRV, and sleep. A high-zone interval day and a long low-zone ride can create very different stress even if both look like successful cardio sessions.

See the zones from the workout you actually did

When a supported workout source provides heart-rate samples or zone summaries, Wellness Project can show the heart-rate trace, average and max heart rate, and time in each available zone inside the workout detail. The same session then stays connected to your longer training and recovery history.

Elias Kiptoo reads this for you.

Frequently asked questions

What are the five heart-rate zones?+

A common model divides intensity into five bands, roughly 50-60%, 60-70%, 70-80%, 80-90%, and 90-100% of maximum heart rate. Exact boundaries vary by device and method, so use the bands as a framework rather than a universal physiological cutoff.

Is Zone 2 the best zone for exercise?+

Zone 2 is valuable for building aerobic volume at a sustainable intensity, but it is not the only useful zone. Harder zones have roles in threshold, interval, and race-specific training. A balanced program uses intensity that matches the goal of each session.

Why are my heart-rate zones different between apps?+

Apps may base zones on estimated max heart rate, observed max, heart-rate reserve, lactate threshold, or custom settings. The percentages and labels can therefore differ even when the underlying heart-rate data is the same.
